History of Mardan Zanana (women's) Hospital

This hospital was founded by a Danish Lady Doctor called Marie Holst in 1906.She was a part of the Danish Tent Mission (later on called the "Danish Pathan Mission"). This was run by a doctor, assisted by Danish sisters and local staff. While in Mardan one of the nursing sisters, Margreth Rasmussen, got married to a man called Jens. He wrote his first book in Danish language about Pathans and Islam. They both spent many happy years in Mardan. She was loyal to the husband till he died in 1966.
Jens was speaking and writing very beautiful Pashto.
The women's hospital building initially had trees and garden where kids used to play. The open area has been converted into the main hospital now and the original women hospital is hidden behind the building. The entrance to the hospital is not easy and is waterlogged after rain. Surely Dr Marie Holst may have done something about it if she was alive.

Mardan Foundation celebrates 100 years of Zanana Hospital

Mardan Foundation successfully arranged a conference on Sunday 5-11-2006. This was the first of its kind and the aim was to raise mass awareness about health, education and other issues faced by people of Mardan. The medical facilities for women were established in Mardan by a lady doctor Marie Holst in 1906.
Apart from locals, a few overseas guests and speakers were invited whilst the district Nazim Himayatullah Mayar was the chief guest. The speakers highlighted the general health issues, the need for improved healthcare and the need for a university in Mardan.

Himayatullah Mayar praised the effort of Mardan Foundation (an organisation run by Mardan.com). He informed the audience about the possibility of opening a new hospital in Mardan. This will be a project of Sheikh Zaid group of hospitals. He also informed that the talks are in progress for the establishment of a University and hopefully Mardan will have a University very soon. There has already been an official approval of a Museum in Mardan. In the end he distributed the scholarship awards amongst the students of Mardan. The scholarships are called BK Khan Scholarships for which the funds are donated by The Friends of Mardan.com and members of Mardan Foundation.
