Humanitarian crisis looms in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa
Khyber Pukhtunkhwa is consistently in the bog of natural disaster like flood and earthquake from the last decade, every time erasing the previous record.Presently an emergency situation has arisen due to flood in various parts of Pukhtunkhwa province of Pakistan resulting huge destruction and devastating various rivers. The flood has swept numerous villages, towns and markets,cleaning the streets of live, in which about 150 dead people has been identified and several thousands stranded to several of the Pukhtunkhwa region.
About 250mm to 300 mm rain for 36 hours has erased the previous record of 35 years. Dozens of bridges, roads and houses have been washed away, resulting the disconnection of communication among various parts of the province.Precious lives, livestock and business have been completely ruined in various parts of the province. They are deprived from the health facilities although the Government has declared emergency in every hospital of the area.
In such emergency situation, some national and international organizations are working hard to give relief to the people. But the relief teams are scarce and are not able to provide adequate relief and to the control the situation. In this major disaster people are looking for shelters, FI (Food Items), NFI (Non Food Items), medicine, and other necessary utensils.
Understanding the problem
Mardan Foundation is the foremost organization worked actively in all emergency situations that had risen in the province. Like previous Mardan Foundation played active role in the Man made disaster, which was created by the conflict between the Militants and Pakistan Army. MF had provided
medical relief to the IDP”s provided shelters and other needful utensils. In 2009 IDP”s crisis and major displacement of people from neighbouring districts of Mardan MF was a front line organization.
Presently MF is dedicated to play again active role in emergency relief campaign that has risen due to flood. The emergency response unit of MF has planed to work in the flood affected areas of province.
We, the team of Mardan Foundation APPEAL to the world community, national and international organization to come forward and support these innocent victims of the flood.
We feel that the world community can help these people reduce their miseries and provide them all the basic needs. Mardan Foundation also request individuals for the donation.

Introduction
Mardan division is geographically, economically and politically an important region of North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. While there are some new developments taking place for the uplift of the area, but it is still way behind other regions. The main reasons are lack of investment in the past, poverty, lack of education, lack of mass awareness and some other social reasons.
MARDAN Foundation (MF) The initiative was taken back in 2003 by a group of like minded volunteers from Mardan. Some are based in Mardan while others are living outside the region. They realised that there was a dire need for the uplift of the entire district. The Foundation will work in every field of life in Mardan, where majority of the people live below the poverty line.
The initial work was done through a website www.mardan.com. This was used for mass awareness and was quite helpful in raising the team for MARDAN Foundation. In Year 2008, the organisation was officially registered with the Department of Social Welfare. The work of the Foundation is run, managed and overseen by a group of highly qualified professionals from different walks of life.
The foundation mainly focuses on national disasters, emergency relief’s, woman development, child protection, education, human rights, health & hygiene, natural resource management & sports.
Mainly focused areas are urban & rural development while MF with community participation struggles for it. It is a non political and non governmental welfare organization, registered with the Department of Social Welfare NWFP Pakistan, under the ordinance of 1961, having Registration Number (DSW/NWFP/2906). Since September 2003 this organization is working for the welfare of the people.
Major Objectives
The following are the main objectives MARDAN Foundation
Social (Socio-economic) Development
MF is working for the advancement of the social life of the people by providing opportunities for socio-economic development, awareness of human rights, identification of social problems and their remedies, fighting against corruption, injustice, poverty, child labour and social evils. It is working for the improvement and betterment of the society, bringing awareness for peace, democracy, equality, environmental protection and to elevate the moral values. MF will help localities to maintain their streets, water courses, drains, sanitation, plantation, restoration, maintenance and development of heritage sites and roads. MF will assist the administration and the community in the annihilation of social evils from the society and will help the poor people through free medical camps by giving them their basic need. It will make efforts to discourage child labour with the help of government and rural community and will assist the Government in their poverty alleviation plans.
Education & Basic Skills
MF will help the poor and needy students by providing free useful information, tutorial services as well as books and other learning materials. Help the community in promoting basic education for children and women. Help devise means for enhancing basic skills of men and women in order to increase their domestic earning. Impart civic education to the community members for establishing a value, thereby creating a sense of responsibility in the rural people. Other informal education related activities will also be performed by this organization.
Basic Health & Sports Facilities
Help the poor people through free medical camps by giving them their basic need. It will liaise with all hospitals / health centres in the area and will work closely with these institutes to promote health awareness. It will work for the establishment of further health facilities in the area. It will promote all kind of healthy sports activities and will work to achieve sports facilities.
Heritage, Cultural & Eco Tourism
MF will help to create awareness amongst the people in promoting Cultural activities. Ruins and relics of old historical cultural of by gone centuries (Takht-i-Bahi, Rani Gut, Jamal Garhai, Shahbaz Garha, Kashmir Smast, Tharali and others) can be preserved through a process of awareness and education of the local people. It will encourage the people to preserve their heritage and will support the steps taken by the local authorities to stop the illegal excavation. It will try to protect these sites for the future generation. This will promote cultural tourism in the whole country.
Environmental Awareness Raising & Environmental Education
MF wants to bring awareness among the people about the Environmental problems and its remedies. The awareness is stretched to common people in general and students in particular. To make the environment clean and beautiful, MF will work on the Environmental Education. It will provide its useful proposals to the relevant authorities.
Community Mobilization & Organization
MF believes that the success of developmental and conservation projects rely on the active participation of local people who are the major stakeholders. MF, therefore, interact with the local people to mobilize and organize them to achieve the objectives of sustainable development and ensure the sustainable utilization of natural resources in Mardan.
Natural Resource Management (NRM)
Mardan support rich biological diversity due to a diverse topography. The tract is characterized by sub-tropical evergreen scrub vegetation with Chir pine forest on the upper reaches in the northern parts and plains in the southern parts. The area harbors Kabul markhor, Common leopard, Gray goral, Kalij pheasant, and four species of partridges. MF collaborates with Mardan Wildlife Division of the NWFP Wildlife Department to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources with the involvement of local communities. Participatory management plans have been developed for Khoi Bermol Game Reserve and Suri Malanderi Game Reserves jointly with the Mardan Wildlife Division. MF strives to collaborate with other potential organizations to conserve the rich biological heritage of Mardan.
